Soul-Soothing Books

The first book I selected from my summer reading list was The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.

It is a sweet book, nothing too tragic or involved. A good book for summer - easy to get through, not taxing on the mind, but entertaining enough to stick with and want to finish.

At first I was a little off-put with the format of the book - it is a series of letters from an author, Juliet Ashton, to various people in her life, such as her publisher, and a childhood friend. And in return, letters and telegrams (remember them?? - I do, just barley - people used to receive them at weddings from absent friends or family - do they still do this?) back to her. It takes place in London and Guernsey Island just after the Nazi occupation in WWII. I was ready to get into a novel, and though slow to start, it progresses along OK, although a little predictable.

It is a light read and would actually make a cute movie :)
